My Favorite Etsy Purchases

Standard

I first discovered Etsy back in 2011 when I opened my shop DesignsByCnC.  As I began to become more familiar with the site, I soon discovered a world of both handmade and vintage goods.

I enjoy supporting my fellow Etsians and often purchase both supplies for my shop, as well as gifts for myself and family.  Today, I would like to share some of my favorite Etsy purchases!

My top favorite is this awesome Healing Skin Salve from Flaherty Naturals.  I love the way it glides onto the skin without feeling greasy.  It works wonderful for dry skin during the winter and the sting of sunburn in the summer!

A great gift for a coffee lover is this Sampler Set from The Coffee Nook.  I tucked this into my husband’s Christmas stocking last year and it was a big hit!

Every Christmas each member of the family receives a new ornament.  This whimsical Snowman Ornament from Townsend Custom Gifts made the perfect gift for my daughter that enjoys riding her motorcycle.

The perfect gift for the son-in-law that loves to hunt is this Natural Camo Soap from FreshAsaDaisySoaps.

When creating my handmade greeting cards, I use high quality cardstocks.  I love the wide range of colors of the Parchment Cardstock from The Envelope Store!

How To Make A Photo Block Puzzle

Standard

DSCN9795

One of the things that I enjoy most about Christmas, is creating handmade gifts for family and friends.  I take a lot of photographs throughout the year, and this project is a fun way to feature some of them.  It was very easy to create and also inexpensive.

DSCN9811

Materials Needed:

  • Wooden blocks 1.5 inches. I used 9 of them.
  • Glossy photo paper.
  • Mod Podge.
  • Acrylic craft paint.  I used 4 different colors that I happened to have on hand that were suitable for a little boy.
  • Ink jet printer.
  • Foam brushes.
  • Sand paper, pencil and paper cutter.

DSCN9796

To begin this project, I numbered the sides of the blocks.  I placed a number 1 on the side that would feature the first photo.  Then I turned the blocks over and placed a number 2 to allow for the second photo.  This helped me to keep track of where the photographs would be placed so that I would remember to leave these areas unpainted.  Next, I painted each side a different color.  While the paint dried, I edited my pictures and cropped them to 4.5 x 4.5 inches, using my Corel Paint Shop Pro program.  These are the dimensions of the block shape with the 9 blocks put together.  I printed the photos onto the glossy paper.  I placed the picture face side down along the bottom edge of the wooden blocks and marked where the edges of the blocks are located.

Next, I placed  the picture face down along the right side of the blocks and marked the edges.  Then I lined the photograph up on my paper cutter and cut along the marked lines.

Apply a thin coat of Mod Poge to the unpainted side of the block and add the photograph piece.  Repeat this step for all of the other 8 blocks.  Let this dry completely.  I let mine sit overnight.  With a piece of fine sand paper, carefully sand the edges of the blocks.  Be sure to sand in a side to side direction.  This will remove the excessive paper from the edges and also give the blocks a slightly distressed look. I wiped each block off to remove the sanding dust being careful not to damage the photo.  Apply a thin layer of Mod Poge over the photo to protect and seal it.

Repeat this entire process for placement of the second photograph.  I really liked the way this puzzle came out and can’t wait to give it as a Christmas present!

Wood Initial Ornament

Standard

DSCN5650

It has been a tradition in our family to give all of the children a Christmas ornament every year.  Over the years, this has ranged from everything from Hallmark Ornaments to handmade ones, either by myself or someone else.  For the ornaments this year, I decided to do a wood initial ornament.  The one shown in the photo is the one that I made for myself.  Since I like pink and polka dots, I thought that this would be a good combination.  I used this one as the practice piece, before I moved on to all the rest of them.  Altogether, I made a total of 8 ornaments.

For this project you will need:  wood letters (4″), modge podge, patterned paper, metal screw eyes (4x15mm), acrylic paint, paint brush, ribbon, silver pearlized cardstock, white cardstock, metal chain link, and a metal eyelet.  I began this project by predrilling a small hole in the top of the letter.  I painted both sides of the letter with the acrylic paint.  This took two coats of paint, letting it thoroughly dry between the two coats.

DSCN5591

For the next step, lay the paper patterned side down.  Keep in mind which way the design on the paper is going to assure proper placement onto the letter.  Put the wooden letter face down onto the paper and trace around it with a pencil.  On the letter tracing, measure in 3/16″ and make a smaller tracing inside the large one.  Cut it out using the smaller tracing as the cut lines.

Follow the directions on the bottle of modge podge to adhere the paper onto the wooden letter.  Make sure that there are no wrinkles or bubbles.  This step took two coats of modge podge, letting it completely dry between the two coats.

To make the tag, I printed my message onto a sheet of white cardstock.  I then used my Cricut machine and the Plantin Schoolbook cartridge to cut a 1″ circle that is centerpointed over the text.  Using the silver pearlized cardstock, I changed over to the Cricut Stretch Your Imagination cartridge and cut out a tag silhouette at 1 1/2″.  I glued the two pieces of the tag together and attached the metal eyelet. I attached the screw eye into the predrilled hold.   It just so happened that I had some small silver chain link on hand, so I used that to attach the tag onto the letter.  I finished off the project by attaching the coordinating ribbon for the hanger.

This was a very fun and easy project to do.  I liked the fact that I was able to customize each one according to hobbies or favorite colors.  For my husband’s ornament, I used fish patterned paper.  My daughter’s favorite color is purple, so naturally I used purple paper.
