Arriving In Mackinaw City at lunch time, we found a little place to get a quick bite, as we were so excited to start our big adventure. After lunch, we decided to cross the bridge and go explore St. Ignace on the upper peninsula. Here we discovered a very beautiful and picturesque little town right on the shore of Lake Huron.Located right down town is a wonderful city park with a boardwalk that goes all around the lighthouse. We enjoyed strolling around the area, taking in all of the beautiful scenery. From here, we could see Mackinac Island out in the distance. Late in the afternoon, we made our way back across to Mackinaw City to locate our hotel and to have dinner.
Early the next morning, we headed over to Shepler’s Ferry to catch a ride over to Mackinac Island. It is a historical resort area, covering 3.8 square miles in land area, in Michigan. Located in Lake Huron, at the eastern end of the Straits of Mackinac, between the state’s Upper and Lower Peninsulas. Travel on the island is either by foot, bicycle, or horse-drawn carriage. We opted to rent bicycles for the day and ride the Around The Shore Tour. Eight miles in circumference, Lake Shore Boulevard (M-185) is the only state highway where cars are banned! As we pedaled our way out from the busy dock area on Main Street, I could feel all tension began to slip away. We stopped many times along the way to enjoy the spectacular views of the shimmering multi-hued blue waters and to take advantage of the many nature hiking trails. The hike up to Arch Rock was simply stunning. Arch Rock is a natural formation, which spans fifty feet at its widest point, and rises 146 feet above the water. We could see for miles and felt like we were on top of the world! It felt like time was standing still. I could feel the warmth of the sun, the slight breeze on my face and hear the gentle sounds of the water lapping the shoreline. I was totally lost in the beauty of the moment and felt like a child again.
We were sad to leave our island paradise. The next morning, as we were loading the car for the ride home, we were greeted by a gorgeous sunrise over Lake Huron. A perfect ending to a wonderful adventure.
